Open projects Application

Are you an EPFL or UNIGE student and do you want to do a project with us?

Follow the instructions below to apply!

Semester Projects / Lab Immersions

We offer several projects every semester. In the section below, you can find examples of possible project topics, grouped into three broad categories. These are illustrative rather than exhaustive, and are meant to help you identify the type of project you are most interested in.

Project categories:

  • Methodological development

Projects focused on developing new methods, while still being applied to real brain data.

Examples: Graph and topological signal processing, Network modeling of functional connectivity, Statistical modeling of structured brain signals. Projects include validation on real neuroimaging datasets.
Required Background: solid programming skills (Python preferred), prior  exposure to signal processing and statistics preferred.
  • Clinical / Neuroscientific applications
Projects involving the application of existing image-processing or statistical methods to address specific clinical or neuroscientific questions Examples: Task-based fMRI group studies, Connectivity analysis in clinical populations. Statistical modeling of disease-related patterns.
Required Background: solid programming skills (Python and/or Matlab), familiarity with statistics (hypothesis testing, group analysis), prior experience with brain imaging and brain image processing tools preferred (eg, Neural signals and signal processing – NX-421 course).
  • Machine Learning / Deep Learning
Design and evaluation of  ML/DL models for brain signals.

Examples: Representation learning on neuroimaging data, Graph neural networks for connectivity analysis. Predictive modeling in clinical datasets. Required Background: prior experience with ML/DL (eg. previous courses & projects), solid programming skills (Python preferred), familiarity with PyTorch/TensorFlow.

How to apply

Please fill in this form to apply. You will be asked to:

  • upload your CV and academic transcript (please indicate in your CV any relevant past project with technical details).
  • indicate your preferred project category among the ones above.
  • for lab immersions, please indicate in the comment box your preferred / available dates.

Applications open 9 weeks before the project start date (please do not apply earlier).

Deadline: 3 weeks before the start date.

Early applications (9–6 weeks before start) increase the likelihood of available topics & projects.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a brief remote interview.
** For summer projects, you can expect feedback from us by the end of April, if you applied before that, or by the end of May, if you applied later.

** For fall projects, you can expect feedback from us by the first week of August, if you applied before that, or by the last week of August, if you applied later.

** For spring projects, you can expect feedback from us by the first week of January, if you applied before that, or by the last week of January, if you applied later.

For any specific questions related to project applications, you can contact us at:
